Eihei-ji Temple, formally known as Kisshōzan Eihei-ji, is one of Japan’s most revered Zen Buddhist temples. Founded in 1244 by Master Dōgen, it remains a living monastery where monks train in the Soto Zen tradition.
Located in the tranquil forests of Fukui, Eihei-ji offers an atmosphere of deep serenity and spiritual presence. Ancient cedar trees, stone paths, moss-covered walls, and historic wooden halls create a setting that feels untouched by time.
While not a typical tourist destination, Eihei-ji welcomes respectful visitors seeking a quiet moment of reflection. The calm, sacred atmosphere also makes it a stunning backdrop for kimono photography, especially in autumn and winter when the scenery becomes truly magical.
A sacred hidden gem where you don’t just visit — you feel.
